Family- Bats
Colony Name- Graywings
Human Name- Gray Bats
Physical Description and Basic Information- Graywings are a very common species of bats, though in recent times their numbers seem to be declining due to a strange disease and lack of good hibernation roosts. Graywings are found all over the mid U.S. and parts of Eastern Canada in small pockets of territory. They are primarily cave bats, having both a summer cave and a winter hibernation cave, with the colony staying together throughout the year, even as they migrate (Though during the spring, females and males sometimes disperse in separate groups).
Graywings are aptly named after their fur color. While most bats have different roots and segments of color throughout a single strand of hair, Graywings have uniformly gray fur throughout the strand. They appear a plain gray to both bats (who are colorblind), and other animals that can actually see in color. Graywings are medium sized bats, with a wingspan about the same as a Brightwing when fully grown, though they reach maturity a little bit before it. They reach full maturity at about two years old instead of one.
Graywings are insectivores, but their preferred hunting grounds are above calm bodies of water, usually not too far away from the mouth of their colony's cave. As a result, a lot of their diet consists of mosquitoes, moths, may flies, dragon flies, gnats, and other such semi-aquatic insects.
Society and Structure- Graywings are a very close knit society, and the structure behind their colony is like one large family. Privacy is almost impossible. Therefore Graywings are very open about themselves and don't see or understand why others wouldn't be. Graywings are protective over the ones they care about. Loyalty and cooperation isn't only expected for Graywings, it should come naturally.
Graywings are firm believers of Nocturna, and see her both as a motherly figure and as a leader. However, unlike the Silverwings, they viewed The Promise as a more indirect act, rather than something requiring a bull blown revolution that threatened the other bats and could have made conditions worse for all of them. However, during the War To Take Back The Sun, Graywings were among the many of the northern bats to fight out of a sense of responsibility and hope. However, Graywings as a whole were content to not fight at all, even if many did regardless. They reasoned that they as bats should be pleased with what they have been given such as the ability to thrive in the night. The Graywings also never gave much flak about humans being involved in Nocturna's prophecy, but neither were they as suspicious or paranoid about the bands. Recent events have made them a little more wary about the humans, but right now, the humans aren't a major concern for the Graywing colonies.
Graywings are a little bit different than other northern bats for the simple fact that they reach maturity at two years of age instead of one. Young Graywings along with their mother undergo a long migration after their birth a few weeks later to their spring cave. Graywings live the rest of the year near or in these caves, eventually joining a juvenile segment of the Graywing colony and becoming self sufficient even though they aren't adults yet. When winter starts arriving, the colony starts dispersing and heading south to their winter migration caves. Before and during this time, Graywings consume a lot of insects to ensure that they don't starve during hibernation. Young females generally head out first, followed by the males and elders, and finally the juveniles. During their second year to this winter cave, males may try to woo a female before hibernation starts, and the females will give birth to one child, repeating the process. The birth of children and the choosing of mates are widely celebrated events, in which whole families are present to celebrate.
Graywings have accurate genealogy accounts based on their reverence for their ancestors and importance placed on family. Graywings are also very knowledgeable about the directions and structure of waterways, and a few Graywings even know how to swim, albeit clumsily. They also have a somewhat advanced understanding of medicinal herbs.
Relationship With Other Creatures-
Northern Bats- Graywings are almost always friendly and well mannered to other northern bats. Even if for some reason the friendly demeanor isn't returned, in the very least, a Graywing will be polite and respectful. The Graywings and the Silverwings currently have a strong alliance.
Owls And Other Predatory Birds- Graywings are surprisingly cold to owls and their allies. Although Graywings are normally not very conflictive and do desire peace, they do not forgive those who hurt their families and loved ones easily. Graywings are very silent and removed when alone or in small company with an owl, but in larger groups, are openly aloof and cold.
Beasts- Graywings are actually very tollerant of beasts (though not particularly friendly), especially if they aren't predators. Generally they have a neutral view of the rats though and let the Silverwings take care of such an alliance.
Vampyrum Spectrum- Few things are more disgusting to a Graywing than the thought of monstrous, cannibal bats. A few individuals of the Graywing colony has suffered to the wings of the cannibals, but not as much as the Brightwings, Silverwings, and other colonies did. Still, the idea of meeting such beings is both repugnant and terrifying.
Humans- Graywings have occasionally suffered to humans in the past. Sometimes humans would disturb their hibernation roosts, awakening some of the members of their colony and causing them to starve or die to exposure. The recent information of the bands would have caused them to be wary as well... However... A recent outbreak of a strange, fungal disease has decimated their colony. Humans have started showing up occasionally, and seem to be concerned about the disease and have made efforts in stopping it. The Graywings aren't sure what to make of the strange beings, but they have decided there isn't much that they could do about them if they aren't exactly harming the colony on purpose.
